TPS complaints – roll of dishonour

I got an unsolicited sales call this evening. Since we’re registered with the TPS, that’s illegal. So I decided to report them via the online complaint form.

In the course of filling in the form I noticed that when it reached the section where I had to give the name of the offending caller it was using a bit of “search as you type” Javascript to auto-complete the form with names matching what I’d typed so far. And the company I was complaining about was one of the suggested names.

Apart from the fact that this is a useful piece of code that makes completing the form easier, it also confirms that they’ve been the subject of previous complaints. Otherwise, there would be no reason for them to be in the auto-complete list.

So it occurred to me to go another step further. What if I could see the full list of names used in the auto-complete? Right-click, select ‘view source’, a quick glance through the HTML and yes, there’s the location of the underlying search page. Open it separately in a new browser tab, and it turns out to be a simple text list of all the names. No server-side processing at all, it’s completely client-side and all the data is downloaded by the browser as you complete the form.

So, what’s in it? At the moment, this is the list:

In total, there are 440 entries in this list. The names range from well-known, generally reputable companies through charities to obvious scammers and shysters. I’ll leave it to you to decide which category each of them falls into, but I was amused by the fact that the alphabetical listing puts “WE CLAIM U GAIN LTD” next to “WE FIGHT ANY CLAIM”. There would be a certain amount of poetic justice if those two ended up battling each other over a claim brought for breach of the TPS.

Even allowing for the fact that some complaints will be misdirected or spurious, though, this is still an excellent list of companies that probably don’t deserve to get your business. Stick with suppliers who advertise their wares and services legally.

  • Luke

The problem a lot of people like you on TPS don’t realise is that you aren’t protected from Market Research calls. It’s in your initial letter from TPS upon joining. A lot of those companies deal in MR, so it’s no wonder they are on this list.

    • youlie

Just because a caller claims to be doing market research – which in reality is collecting information to generate sales leads – does not absolve them from the legal obligations covering unsolicited sales calls

  • UKIParexenophobicidiots

I have been getting verseas calls from some Indians claiming to be the “computer technical dept”. I just tell them that they are fraudsters and liars, before putting the phone down. Yesterday, I only got as far as “fraudsters” when they put the phone down!

    • Dave

I find a simple f**k off goes a long way.

      • idiot abuser

        fuck off then

    • EnglishRose

They can be very confusing too. i was delaing with BT (Indian call centre legitimate) recently and then had a spate of fraudsters from India who were very convincing – with queries about my broadband. Very hard to distinguish the real indians BT people from the fraudsters.

  • http://twitter.com/dergal Gerry White

“…you aren’t protected from Market Research calls…” a lot of companies are now claiming that it is MR when they are actually trying to sell you something. I simply don’t want to be cold called .

    • postslikethisannoyme

Then put down the phone when they call? I get calls telling me that I’m owed PPI refunds etc when I’ve never had anything but a debit card. people need to eat and need the dollar to support their families just as I am sure you do with your job :)

      • Richard Olpin

They may need to eat, but they don’t need to call a number which is registered with the TPS. If they do, they’re lowlife and deserve to be treated as such.

        • luddite hater

Get over it! TPS is a waste of time, a waste of money and just generally a useless service. Grow some balls and say no to the person that’s calling you instead of trolling websites complaining about people who are just doing what they are paid to do. If it bothers you that much, join the rest of us in the 21st century and stop using the land line phone. That way, when it rings, you know its likely a sales call, and you don’t need to answer it. Mobile phones are cheaper anyway.

If you are getting called whilst being on TPS, it is your fault. Sorry to say it, but it is. YOU have failed to tick a box online that said do not call me. YOU didn’t tell the person you spoke to down the phone you dont agree when they said they will pass your details on to selected 3rd parties.

TPS can’t possibly stop everyone if you are handing your number out here there and everywhere.

I don’t care if you say you haven’t done that. If not you, someone else in your house. Your wife, your son, your daughter. Its one of them.

        • EnglishRose

Indeed. I race down the stairs nearly killing myself dropping whatever I am doing when the phone goes or I stop doing some complicated work drafting and break off and that is very very disrupting.

  • realistic

stop giving out your phone number to companies if you dont want to be called you mug…i bet you dont read the terms and conditions each time you tick to say you agree with them and i bet you dont ask why do you want my number each time you are asked for it in a shop

  • Malcolm Russell

My mobile number is registered with TPS and I do not give it out unless absolutely necessary to reputable companies, with whom I keep a close check, but still I get constant phone calls and texts from companies trying to get me to make PPI claims, claim prizes and all the other usual rubbish. I have even been contacted while overseas. I have just been bothered by a company called My Reclaim (phone number 01142782796) whose website says: ‘MyReclaim is a trading style of Pennington Legal Limited. Company Registration 07647057’. They claim to be regulated by the Ministry of Justice and registered under the Data Protection Act (whatever that means). Pennington is run by one Director: Muhammad Raihan Patel who is associated with 12 companies, five of which have been dissolved. Full details are here: http://company-director-check.co.uk/director/910710044. Not the sort of person I would want to be looking after my financial affairs in any case, and certainly not the sort of person I want bothering me, or getting his family to bother me. I am convinced that my mobile number is being sold by someone to marketing lists, but I have found it impossible to get companies to disclose where they get the number from. Anyone else been successful on this?

    • poo head

I got a sim card from virgin mobile for an old phone for emergency use only. The number has never been given out or used. Yet within a couple of weeks I started getting PPI texts etc on it. My wife is with virgin too and gets loads of PPI texts, I’m with Tesco and get none.
From this one can only conclude that Virgin mobile are the ones selling the information – what hope have we to reduce the amount if junk calls when the operators themselves are the ones selling our details.

    • EnglishRose

Penningtons itself is a very reputable business law firm. There has been a rash of scams where companies pretend to be law firms. They even copy the website almost exactly of the law firm. It’s dreadful.

  • IDIOT ABUSER

You busy cunt, has your pen run out of ink yet

  • 329seven

Your a bunch of ignorant idiots, that have your eyes fully pulled shut, people’s attitudes towards cold calling makes me so angry, we live in a society where every body needs a job. To create jobs you need to sell a product or services, to sell a product or services you need to advertise. Cold calling is the virus of capitalism. I’m fucked of with people bitching bout cold calling but not looking at the source of the problem what is a capitalistic need to sell anything And every think. So grows some balls have an honest conversations with a cold caller (who doesn’t actually want to talk to u either but we All need bread) and give your honest view on the product/services being offered or fuck of to Cuba

    • Pauline

      So many grammar errors. Twat.

    • Brute Foresight

No no no.. if people sign up to the “TELEPHONE PREFERENCE SERVICE” it means they DON’T want calls from selfish idiots like you!!!!!!.. unless you want to be heavily fined for it!!!!! dummy!!!!

      • Brute Foresight

Oh and btw it’s spelled YOU’RE… you have no idea how much ignorant IDIOTS like you make me feel!!!! go get an honest job or do one!!!!

        • Brute Foresight

.. and stop trying to prey on the vulnerable and take their money, dickhead

  • 329seven
  • earl

Basically what people need to do is stop giving their phone number out if they don’t want “unsolicited” calls. If you forgot to tick a box at the bottom of a form to opt out, or something along those lines, you basically opted in and the calls aren’t unsolicited, because as far as the call centre knows, you asked for these calls. I used to work in a call centre, and we often had people saying these calls are illegal and they are registered with TPS, and after telling them that they opted into something, they would deny it… 9 times out of ten they were in the wrong and had forgotten to tick something.. Of course sometimes peoples numbers just slipped through the cracks. Basically, if you have started receiving cold calls when you are registed with TPS, you might as well cancel your TPS, because at that time you’ve opted in and TPS doesn’t cover it and its a waste of moey. Also, telling the person to fuck off doesn’t make a difference, we’ll just call back, same as saying I’m busy, we will call back. Ask to be taken off the calling list. Hanging up doesn’t do anything either, we’ll just call back, and also saying that you don’t want the calls and asking to be taken off the list if you are not he person who was asked for. We will call back and ask for that person until the person tells us themselves that they don’t want the call

Tps is just a service for old people to feel more secure, but it doesn’t work and you might as well cancel it and grow some balls and tell the person you dont want to be called, instead of shouting that you are TPS registered, because again, that doesn’t wrk if you opted in… Or just stay with TPS and read your terms and confditions on your forms etc

    • Idiot Basher

“you basically opted in”… what you described is exactly the opposite of an opt-in system; an opt in system is where you take a positive action to confirm your acceptance.

“as far as the call centre knows, you asked for these calls” asking for the call would have been a positive action.

“9 times out of ten they were in the wrong and had forgotten to tick something” – That would be an opt-out system…

With call centre staff like this it’s no wonder stopping nuisance calls is so difficult.

      • Jonathan

Oh no, he mixed up opt-in and opt-out… Ah well, I doubt you misunderstood what he actually meant, seeing as you were kind enough to correct him :)

Stopping nuisance calls isn’t difficult at all. Answer the phone and say
“I’m not interested, could you take my number from the calling list?” Wait for them to say ‘yes’, then say “ok, thanks, bye”… It takes 10 – 15 seconds, and that’s one company who doesn’t call you again.

A hint as well. If you suddenly start getting loads of cold calls; it isn’t the fault of the companies. the don’t know who else is calling you. It is the fault of whoever went online at your house and filled in a load of surveys thinking they may win an Ipad, or a shopping voucher. And TPS can’t help you. Ok it gives you a medium to complain, but once they look into it and realised these calls were indirectly solicited (see what I did there idiot basher), then the case is dropped. As good as TPS may be, they cannot prevent people calling you if you give your phone number out.

Another thing; it is up to the data provider, companies like DLG, to check for TPS, not the company calling, so blame them, not us.

        • Mike Pellatt

“It is up to the data provider, companies like DLG, to check for TPS, not the company calling”

Just plain wrong. Check the regulations. It is the calling company’s responsibility.

    • EnglishRose

I am definitely registered on all my numbers with TPS and I still get cold calls every single day. I’ve had one today already. I don’t tell them to f off. I saw I am registered with TPS and they must take me off their datab ase.
Also many of us are very busy indeed trying to work and calls are very disrupting. Yet if I don’t take a call it may be a nice client and by failing to answer it we don’t eat!

  • James

If you think about it, and stop moaning and groaning about the companies calling you, it isn’t them, like i have seen mentioned here, the people you want to direct your anger at is your service providers who release your number to these companies, this is why you get tens of calls a week, so if you want to let off steam let it off in the right direction, yes i agree that it is annoying, but also there is a need for business’ to drag work in to survive

  • postslikethisannoyme

You do realise that Oxfam and RSPCA are on that list you’ve pulled up don’t you? clearly not cold callers but a charity so do you honestly believe all of those companies get cold call complaints? Just put the phone down and chill, it’s not a big deal you know.

    • Richard Olpin

If they call you and they didn’t already have a business relationship with you, that’s still cold calling. If I want to donate, I’ll do so. Phone me up uninvited and you can guarantee I’ll never deal with you again.

      • Straker

        My exact thoughts too Richard!

    • EnglishRose

That’s stil bad – charities in my view shoud never call anyone. There has been a huge problem with charities calling again and again to old people to get them to up their existing subscriptions even for existing donors.

  • Richard Olpin

I manage to avoid most of them as I have a TrueCall unit connected to my phone, but still get the occasional one. Got ELM Legal Services this evening. Added to my TrueCall blocklist and reported to TPS. Will make a point to report every one that I get in future too.

  • damien

I am probably going to be the only call centre worker here who says what we really think. Because we are the ones being talked about, we always have to have a reasoned argument about why we are only doing our jobs etc, but I’m sick of it, because old, clueless men sit and still believe everything they write.

As a call centre worker, we don’t care what you think. We don’t want to talk to you either. We show exceptional self restraint to not shout at some of you down the phone. We will ask you twice, maybe three times max, never more than that. If you hang up, we don’t cry. If you shout, we don’t cry. We are quite resilient, but if a caller gets funny with you, its because you have done something that ghandi would kick off about.
Don’t bother with TPS, its a waste of time and money. Answer the phone and ask not to be called again.

Btw, I work for a PPI company. PPI companies are probably the only cold callers who are actually trying to con you, so the rest you could give a little room, because they may generally have something you expressed an interest in.

    • EnglishRose

But none of them should be calling any of us who are registered with TPS – that’s the point – the calls break the law.

  • headbanger

when you ask not to be called again by these ‘call centres’ you waste your breath as they call back time and time again or change their number and what right have they to obtain your details via the electoral role particularly when you have opted out, makes my blood boil

  • torino390

I never directly answer my land line any more as I can’t see who’s calling. If the caller is genuine and really wants to talk to me, they would leave a message and I would ring them back immediately. It seems even after a hard days work, and in your own home trying to relax, there is no peace any more.

  • Blackout842

It’s funny that you all complain about cold callers. A job is a job just simply say no to what they are offering and get on with ur day don’t be rude to them, trust me they don’t want to call you. Would u rather them be unemployed Claming benefits which u pay for through tax…. No you wouldn’t at least these people are paying tax and have a job instead of sponging off you so think about that next time u tell them to get a real job

    • EnglishRose

      1. Many of my elderly neighbours have been hoodwinked by scams.
      2. My time is valuable. Work full time single parent and when a scammer is on the line or a cold caller I am not earnig and yes these people don’t pay me for the interruption or time. I am not sitting here by the phone bored to tears hoping the line will ring. I am instead waiting for important business calls.

  • Dominic Wall

    Mark
Thanks for the link to the TPS complaints page-
    https://complaints.tpsonline.org.uk/consumer/
I’ve just used it. In reply to Blackout842’s earlier comment, although the call handlers may be folk who are just trying to earn a wage their employers have responsibility to ensure the call handlers aren’t causing distress and upset by placing unsolicited calls to people unnecessarily and without accountability. If a caller’s legit and has nothing to hide then they’d be happy to provide their contact details including company name, address and telephone number- and maybe have a website too, no? So if that’s the case how come a lot of these calls come without contact information, the caller’s number’s withheld or unavailable through a ‘1471’ service, and the caller just cuts the call off when asked for the information?
The list of addresses is now available by viewing the ‘page source’ at https://complaints.tpsonline.org.uk/consumer/complaint
(but you have to complete the online complaints process to Page 4 to get to the page with the current list).
    Thanks, Dominic

  • EnglishRose

Clean Green Energy just called me (yet again) as they are “in the area”. From England so not an Indian scam (what I usually get from “BT” or “Microsoft” (not). They were quite polite – I said please take me off your list I am with the TPS. He agreed and put down the phone.
